Humans learn languages better by interacting with other humans
LalTal connects English learners with coaches. Using asynchronous, audio voice messaging (without having to be connected at the same time!), learners practice speaking and listening in English for ~10 min each day.
Their language coaches provide corrections for grammar and pronunciation and teach new vocabulary, but, most importantly, they connect the learner’s daily English language practice with the learner’s goals, so that learners begin to make English a real part of their lives.

LalTal was formed in the summer of 2020 to facilitate the exchange of knowledge between people who have it and those who want to obtain it. We’ve learned a lot since then. We understand how hard it is to learn and that one of the biggest challenges to do so is to take that first step and keep going, day after day, for a lifetime.

John Cumbers, PhD
Before launching LalTal, John was the founder of SynBioBeta, the premier innovation network for synthetic biology and biotechnology. He helped launch NASA’s synthetic biology program and holds degrees in bioinformatics, cell and molecular biology. Having transitioned from computer science to biology during his academic career, John is passionate about helping people learn in non-traditional ways, getting at the heart of why and how humans learn.

T.J. Kneale
T.J. was a fighter pilot and test pilot in the US Navy before moving into product management of a $6B portfolio of software and avionics for the F-35 program. After leaving the Navy, T.J. was the Head of Moonshot Launch at Alpha, Telefónica’s moonshot factory, where he led a team-building an Artificial Intelligence Tutor. For T.J., LalTal captures all that was great about Alpha’s vision of the future of learning, but in a more human-centered way – connecting humans to do what they do best, teach and learn from each other.
